It simply greps itself for the argument you use on the command line. You may have noticed that I like self-contained scripts and technically this one consists of an echo command, a grep command, and 1100+ lines of errors. I used the exec command to dump out of the script when it executes the grep rather than commenting out all 1100 lines of language codes because I liked the output better this way. I could have commented them out then piped the output to tr to get rid of the pound sign, but why waste another command?
Usage:
Just type the script name with the language code as an argument. Example using "sw" as the code we want to look up:
# ./lcodes.sh swAs you can see, it's rather permissive and gives you multiple choices in it's output. It looks for anything matching "| sw" which includes "| swa" and "| swe" under the ISO 639-2 language code category. I prefer it that way, but you can get stricter matching by simply adding a space after the "1" in the grep line to change it from
| ISO 639-2 | ISO 639-1 | English name of |
| Code | Code | Language |
|----------- ----------- ---------------------
| swa | sw | Swahili |
| swe | sv | Swedish |
#
exec grep "| $1" $0
to
exec grep "| $1 " $0
It will then look for "| sw" followed by a space ("| sw ") and will only return the ISO 639-1 code for Swahili. But these language codes aren't an exact science so I prefer the more verbal output.
